Toutiao Article Program (TAP)

A Nanchang Project Initiative

What is Toutiao?

Nanchang Project is now accepting registrations for our free Toutiao Article Program (TAP), an adoptee-run initiative! Toutiao is a popular Chinese news and information content platform/app with a reported 120 million daily active users. In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for foreigners residing outside of China to successfully create accounts on key Chinese social media platforms and regularly post to them. We believe that utilizing Toutiao’s digital platform can help searching adoptees expand their audience and, ideally, reach new birth families.

How TAP Works

  1. You submit all required information and photos to us using the TAP Registration Form.

  2. Our TAP team (run by adoptee volunteers) reviews the information you submitted and creates an article using our template in Chinese (either for an individual post or group of adoptees from the same area).

  3. The article draft and your photos are sent to our trusted bilingual volunteer in China who will review the submission, make any necessary translation changes, and publish it to Toutiao, inviting anyone with useful information to contact us.

  4. Once published, we will send you a link to your posted article on Toutiao.

  5. Our bilingual volunteers will carefully review any new contacts and all potential birth families will be offered a free DNA test.

  6. We will immediately notify you at any time if a contact comes forward with information for you or if they could be a potential biological relative of yours—even years into the future.

  7. In the case of a potential match, all DNA comparisons will take place on GEDmatch.com. Adoptees need only to upload their raw data from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, or FTDNA, and enable matching with other kits. Nanchang Project provides free matches to adoptees who match with a birth parent, sibling, aunt/uncle, grandparent, or first cousin. You can find instructions on using GEDmatch here and also read more information about DNA testing options here.

We request that adoptees complete this form fully and as accurately as possible. Please have your adoption documents handy to help you answer the questions. We also require that you upload copies of your adoption documents as well as photos of yourself (and family) to be included in the article.

NCPT Background

The Nanchang Project (NCPT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2018, fully operated by volunteers. Our mission is to help connect adoptees to their roots in China. To date, we have assisted in 50 reunions and registered around 300 birth families. We are proudly also the only organization of its kind that is co-led by Chinese adoptees and adoptive parents, with the intent to be fully run by adult adoptees in the future.

We are able to offer TAP as a free service to our community because our work is 100% volunteer-led. We welcome donations in any amount if you are in a position to financially give. Funds are used to pay for birth families' DNA tests, partially subsidize Origins Searches to make private searching affordable, and cover trips to China for our volunteers and adult adoptees. If you would like to donate, please visit our donation page. Thank you!
